SENIOR SATURDAY
Even though it wasn't her last home game, senior forward
Madison May had a memorable Senior Day in a 72-42 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday. The Athens, West Virginia native poured in 24 points as she moved into fourth on the all-time scoring list at Concord, passing both
Jolysa Brown and Samm Nester in the process. May now has 1,676 career points, 18th-most among active Division II players. Additionally, May is 47 points away from moving into third on the all-time scoring ranks at Concord. May also helped the Mountain Lions to their sixth win by 20 or more points this season on Saturday.
BENCH BUCKETS
In the two wins last week, CU's bench averaged 20 points as it posted 21 points at Davis & Elkins and added 19 more points on Saturday. Junior forward
Tamra Scott had her fourth double-figure game of the season with 12 points at D&E and added seven more versus Wesleyan. Freshman guard
Ashton Funderburg scored six points in each game while redshirt freshman forward
Alexis Phillips provided three points and three rebounds in five minutes of action against Davis & Elkins. In four of the last five games, the Concord reserves have combined to score 10 or more points and are averaging 13.0 points per game. Earlier this season, the Mountain Lions received 18 bench points, led by 10 points from Scott and another eight from freshman guard
Jazz Blankenship, in a 122-112 win at WVSU.
ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
In the win at West Virginia State, Concord scored a Division II program record 122 points. Junior forward
Riley Fitzwater, sophomore guard
Maggie Guynn and May combined for 87 of the 122 points as Fitzwater posted her season high in points with 27. Meanwhile, May set her career high in points at 38 which she later tied at West Liberty this season. The Mountain Lions assisted on 30 of 50 made shots, which are the second-most assists in an MEC game this season. Fitzwater, Guynn and sophomore guard
Gracie Robinson all handed out five assists. Additionally, CU shot 61.7 percent (50-of-81) in the game, one of three times Concord has cracked 60 percent from the field this season.
STRENGTH ON STRENGTH
The Mountain Lions enter the week having held each of its last four opponents to 25 percent or less from three-point range, including limiting West Virginia Wesleyan to 12.5 percent (2-for-16) from beyond the arc Saturday. Over those four games, CU has allowed just a combined 21 made three-pointers. And Concord is up to third in the MEC in three-point defense (29.6 percent). However, the Maroon and Gray faces two of Division II's best three-point shooting teams. Glenville State leads the country in three-pointers made per game (12.4) while WVSU checks with 9.6 made triples per game, 10th in Division II. GSC shoots 36.1 percent from three-point range, second in the MEC while the Yellow Jackets are a 30.1 percent shooting team from behind the arc. CU allowed 13 triples to West Virginia State and 16 to GSC earlier in the season.
