HOME IS WHERE THE SHOTS FALL
While this past Saturday wasn't the final home games of the season for CU, the program celebrated senior guards
Trey Brisco and
Martin Kelly Jr. with the 98-83 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day at the Carter Center. Going back to the 2006-07 season, the Mountain Lions are undefeated on Senior Day. For the second straight home game, Concord shot over 60 percent from the field as well as from three-point range. Sophomore guard
Brandon Kennedy led the three-point barrage as he sank 7-of-11 three-pointers in the game. Junior guard/forward
Malik Johnson hit on 6-of-8 shots while sophomore guard
Seth Brown was 4-for-4 from the field for a career-best nine points. CU had not shot 50 percent or better in consecutive home games since February 2017 against West Liberty and West Virginia Wesleyan before Saturday and the February 12 game versus Wheeling.
PARTY FOR THREE
Part of Concord's shooting display was the Mountain Lions connecting on 15 three-pointers, the most in a game since 18 almost a year to the day at Urbana February 23, 2019. Kennedy tied for the second-most triples in an MEC game this season with his seven Saturday, trailing only the eight made by Glenville State's Hegel Augustin at Fairmont State. Freshman guard
Ethan Heller and junior forward
David Bea Mulumba each hit two three-pointers. Saturday marked the sixth time this season that the Mountain Lions made at least 12 three-pointers in a game as they are now 5-1 in those games—the lone loss at Wesleyan in overtime. On a different note, CU is 28-for-45 from three-point range (62.2 percent) in its last two home games.
WINNING TIME
In his three-plus seasons at Concord, head coach
Todd May has a career record of 58-56 after Saturday, but during his tenure all four of May's teams have progressed throughout the season. Nearly half of the CU coach's wins have come either in February or March—23 victories—and he has a career winning percentage of .621 (23-14) in final two months of the season. This year, the Maroon and Gray has won half of its games for the season in the month of February, alone. And by winning one game this week, Concord clinches a winning month of February for the sixth straight year.
HAPPY TO ASSIST
For the third time in four games, the Mountain Lions handed out 20 or more assists as they passed out 22 assists on 32 made field goals versus Wesleyan. Brisco dished out eight assists, one off his career high set against Wheeling earlier in the month. Heller and Mulumba each had four assists in the game. For the contest, CU assisted on all 15 three-pointers, and an assist was recorded on 63 of 79 points scored from the field as Concord also had 19 made free throws in the game. The Mountain Lions still rank just ninth in the MEC in assists per game at 13.7 despite all the passing recently. GSC hands out 17.1 assists per game, second in the conference.
THREE-POINT DISPLAY
Concord goes up against two of the best three-point shooting teams this week in West Virginia State and Glenville State. GSC ranks first in the MEC in three-pointers made per game (12.6), and is third in Division II in three-pointers. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets are fourth in the conference in three-pointers per game (8.8). In its eight games during the month of February, CU has held six of eight teams to less than 40 percent shooting from distance. Nine of Concord's 10 wins this season have come when it holds the opposition to less than 40 percent shooting from three-point range with the lone exception coming against West Virginia Wesleyan over the weekend.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
9- Concord is 9-0 when leading at halftime this season as it improved on that statistic in both games last week.
15- On Wednesday, Brisco will become just the 15
th player in program history with 100 career games played and 100 career made three-pointers.
300- Concord is one of five teams in the MEC with four players having scored 300 or more points this season after Heller and Kelly Jr. went over the plateau Saturday.
WEST VIRGINIA STATE AT A GLANCE
The Yellow Jackets held off a furious second-half rally from Concord in November as it won 98-94 after opening the game on a 35-16 run. Glen Abram is fourth in the MEC in scoring at 18.8 points per game. Do-it-all forward Anthony Pittman ranks second in the MEC in blocks (1.5), third in steals (2.1), sixth in rebounding (7.7), 10
th in field-goal percentage (50.2) and 20
th in scoring (15.1). WVSU rebounded from an overtime loss during the middle of the week at Urbana, and knocked off Notre Dame on Saturday to give it the most wins in a season since 2010-11.
GLENVILLE STATE AT A GLANCE
The Pioneers hosts Charleston Wednesday night trying to buck the long losing streak before coming to the Carter Center. Phil Bledsoe is just shy of averaging of a double-double with 20.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game to go with a 44.3 percent showing from the floor. Augustin posts 15.9 points per game while Steven Verplancken has scored double figures in 15 of his last 17 games and is now averaging 15.7 point per game. Tyvon Taylor rounds out the double figure scorers with 10.0 points per game. The Pioneers haven't won a road game since January 29, an overtime victory over Urbana.
