Concord Finishes Up Road Trip at Notre Dame, Plays Host to Urbana

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team concludes a three-game road trip at Notre Dame 5:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting its first home game in 14 days when it welcomes Urbana to the Carter Center 2:00 p.m. Saturday in two Mountain East Conference games.

RECORDS
CU is 11-6 overall and 8-4 against league foes entering the week. Notre Dame is 16-2 overall and tied atop the MEC with a 10-2 MEC mark. Urbana is tied with the Mountain Lions at 8-4 in the MEC and sports a 12-6 overall record.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
After recording 34 points at Glenville State Sunday, which was her fourth 30-point game of the season, senior forward Madison May is within four points of 1,500 for her career. She would become the seventh player in program history to register the milestone. Additionally, May handed out seven assists, one shy of her career high, at Charleston, and added three more at GSC, to up her career total to 278. The Athens, West Virginia native is within four assists of moving past Emily Boothe for fifth on the all-time assists list at CU. May is already one of two players in program history that is top 10 in points, rebounds and assists with the other being Jolysa Brown.

HOT STREAK
In the 110-84 loss Sunday, sophomore guard Gracie Robinson played one of the best games of her young career as she posted a career-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. In fact, Robinson has elevated her play over the last few weeks. The Wytheville, Virginia native is averaging 10.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game in her last five contests. For the season, Robinson is scoring just 6.9 points per game. However, the starting point guard has seen her scoring average climb 1.3 points per game since the start of the calendar year. Additionally, Robinson is shooting 51.5 percent (17-for-33) from the field in the last five games.

AMONG THE LEADERS
Junior forward Riley Fitzwater begins the week first nationally in field goal percentage at 67.2 for the season while ranking second in blocks per game (4.0) among Division II players. Fitzwater is just outside the top 10 in Division II in rebounds per game (11th / 11.0). Meanwhile, May sits ninth nationally in points per game (22.0) while her 112 made free throws are tied for sixth in the country. Traditionally, Fitzwater has played some of her best games against Notre Dame. In five career games versus the Falcons, the Glenville, West Virginia native is averaging 22.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game while shooting a blistering 80 percent (52-for-65) from the field. Fitzwater has three career double-double versus NDC and scored her career high of 34 points during a contest in February 2018 against Notre Dame.

STRENGTH ON STRENGTH
Not only do the Mountain Lions have some individuals among the statistical leaders in Division II, but CU as a team is ranked seventh nationally in field-goal percentage (47.7) and is 21st in points per game (78.6). Concord's efficient offense will be put to the test against Notre Dame as the Falcons are second in the league in scoring defense (68.8) and are fourth in field-goal defense (40.1). During a 10-game win streak that was snapped on Saturday versus Urbana, Notre Dame held seven opponents below 65 points. During a win at the Carter Center in December that started the win streak, NDC allowed Concord to shoot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the field. Fitzwater led the attack for CU, going 10-for-13 from the field. Sophomore guard Maggie Guynn added a 6-for-12 showing.

GOING FORWARD
Four of the best forwards in the MEC will go head-to-head Saturday at the Carter Center when the duo of Sylvia Hudson and Tyra James and Urbana come to town against Fitzwater and May. Hudson (20.0 points per game) and James (22.9 points per game) are the highest scoring teammates in Division II. They combine to score 52.7 percent of UU's points this season. Meanwhile, Fitzwater and May are combining to score 37.5 points per game or 47.7 percent of Concord's scoring. However, the Mountain Lions' second leading scorer is Guynn who scores 16.0 points per game, 15th in the MEC. Fitzwater and May combined to score 45 of CU's 78 points in a 78-66 road win at UU earlier this year. James and Hudson posted 35 combined points.

NOTRE DAME AT A GLANCE
The two games Notre Dame has dropped this season have both been at home as it is a perfect 10-0 away from Murphy Gymnasium. Glenville State and Urbana have both beaten the Falcons at home. Seina Adachi is the leading scorer at 19.0 points per game. Adachi's backcourt mate Jada Marone scores 15.7 points per game, and earlier this season scored 17 points against CU aided by a perfect 5-for-5 showing from three-point range. Despite being tied atop the league standings, NDC does not lead the MEC in any major statistical category.

URBANA AT A GLANCE
Bailey Draughn joins Hudson and James in double figures at 10.1 points per game. The Blue Knights lead the MEC in assists per game at 17.1, and are 14th nationally in the statistic. UU has won seven of its last eight games while topping 80 points in seven of the eight contests. James is the reigning MEC Player of the Week in which she averaged 27.5 points and 19.5 rebounds per game in contests against West Liberty and NDC. Urbana surrendered a 49.2 percent shooting night to Concord in the first meeting this season.
