RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 4-9 this season and 2-6 against MEC teams.
WVWC sports a mark of 5-9 overall and a 4-4 record in the conference.
Davis & Elkins is 4-10 on the year and, like CU, is 2-6 in the MEC.
TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK
In a 74-71 road loss to Wheeling, Concord committed a season-low eight turnovers while forcing the Cardinals into 14 turnovers. Additionally, CU's +6 turnover margin was the highest of the season. The last time Concord had single-digit turnovers was last season's home finale against West Virginia State. In the game against Wheeling, freshman guard
Ethan Heller finished one assist off his career high with four while committing just one turnover. Concord's turnover margin this season is -1.3 while Davis & Elkins is -1.9 and Wesleyan's is -3.2.
DOUBLING UP
Concord had two players record double-doubles last week. Senior guard
Trey Brisco had his first double-double of the season and fifth career with 20 points and 10 rebounds at home against West Liberty. Brisco's last double-double came last season in the third game of the year at Bluefield State. Junior forward
Liam Evans notched his first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds at Wheeling. Evans scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half of the contest over the weekend. The only other Mountain Lion with a double-double this season is senior guard
Martin Kelly Jr. who had 15 points and 10 rebounds versus Notre Dame.
MR. CONSISTENCY
Junior guard/forward
Malik Johnson averaged 17.5 points last week across the two games, including finishing two points off his career high with 19 points at Wheeling. Johnson hit 8-of-9 free throws in the contest to aid his performance versus the Cardinals. With two double-digit scoring games, Johnson has now scored 10 or more points in 12 of the 13 games this season. No other CU player has scored 10 or more points in 10 games this season. The Wytheville, Virginia native is averaging 15.1 points per game this season which is tied for 17
th in the MEC. And last season Johnson averaged 10 points per game versus WVWC.
THREE-POINT THREATS
Concord, West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins all shoot very similar percentages from three-point range. As a team, the Mountain Lions are at 36.0 percent for the season. Wesleyan sports a 35.7 percent mark from beyond the arc while the Senators check in at 33.6 percent. CU's leader in three-point percentage is Brisco who comes into the week shooting 50 percent (24-for-48). The only other player in the MEC shooting 50 percent or better from three-point range with at least 45 attempts is West Liberty's Pat Robinson (50.9 percent / 29-for-57). In a smaller sample size, junior forward
David Bea Mulumba is connected on 38.5 percent of his three-pointers (15-for-39). Wesleyan's top three-point shooter is Daylin Lee who enters the week at 44.2 percent (19-for-43). The Bobcats are surrendering a league-high 38.5 percent from three-point range this season. Donte Doleman is the top marksmen from three-point distance for D&E as he shoots it at 44.0 percent (33-for-75). All three teams average between 8.2 and 7.3 three-pointers made per game.
UPSET ON THE MIND
Though Concord and Davis & Elkins both enter the week at 2-6 in conference play, and WVWC is just 4-4, all three teams have wins over a top three team in the MEC. Concord opened the conference season with a win over Charleston who has dropped just one other league game since late November. Like the Mountain Lions, D&E made an early statement in the conference slate by earning a road upset over Fairmont State, who is 10-3 on the year. For WVWC, it erased a 44-26 halftime deficit on the road at West Liberty and came away with a 94-91 victory on a Dusan Vicentic buzzer-beating three-pointer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
18- Combined number of three-pointers Concord made in two games against Wesleyan last season.
34- Shooting percentage that CU held Davis & Elkins to when the teams last met at the Carter Center in February 2015, an 83-57 Concord win.
40- Points in the paint for Concord at Wheeling, the most since scoring 54 at West Virginia State in late November.
WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN AT A GLANCE
Head coach Nick Patella is in his first season at Wesleyan after making the move from Davis & Elkins after four seasons as the head coach of the Senators. Patella played at West Virginia from 2002-05. The Bobcats have five players averaging double figures led by Vicentic's 15.4 points per game. Lee nets 12.5 points per game while Ross Young is at 12.3 points per game. Luka Petrovic who distributes 5.1 assists per game—third in the MEC—averages 10.4 points per game. Clay Todd rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.3 points per game. Normally a tough place for opponents, West Virginia Wesleyan is just 1-4 inside the Rockefeller Center this season.
DAVIS & ELKINS AT A GLANCE
Doleman continues to climb in the MEC in scoring as he enters the week at 18.1 points per game, sixth in the conference. Myles Monroe averages 12.9 points per game while Erkam Kiris nets 12.5 points per game to round out the players in double figures for the Senators. D&E has lost six straight games to start the week, but two losses came by seven points or less and another in overtime to Notre Dame. Davis & Elkins will host Glenville State Wednesday, but is just 1-5 on the road as it travels to the Carter Center Saturday.
