ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Frostburg State Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field in the Mountain East Conference opener for both teams.
Concord (1-0-1, 0-0-1 MEC) held an advantage in total shots (14-11) and corner kicks (8-7), but it was the Bobcats (0-1-1, 0-0-1 MEC) that held a small edge in shots on target, 5-3.
FSU had the upper hand in the first half as junior goalkeeper
Kyle Brown made three of his five saves in the opening 45 minutes of play. Junior defender
Bruno Baptista had the lone Concord shot on goal in the first half with a blast in the 45
th minute.
The Mountain Lions controlled the second half and overtime by outshooting FSU 10-4 including a look at the net from approximately five yards away in the 89
th minute. A Concord cross from the left side of the penalty area was deflected away by Frostburg State goalkeeper Joel Assal right onto the foot of freshman forward
Matt Shelor who missed the target high.
Each team had a shot in the first overtime including Frostburg State steering a shot just wide of the goal in the 95
th minute. Shelor had another look at goal in the 106
th minute, but Assal made the save.
Brown recorded his second straight shutout to the start the season by making five saves. Sophomore
Daniel Culverwell had four total shots for the Mountain Lions. Baptista and Shelor each added two.
CU takes to the road for the first time this season with a MEC contest at West Liberty 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
