Concord Slips By King, 1-0

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over King Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field to begin the 2019 season.

Despite being outshot 13-6 in the contest and 5-2 in the first half, CU (1-0) remained tied with the Tornado (0-1) at halftime. Junior goalkeeper Kyle Brown made two saves in the first half including a sprawling save to keep the game knotted after 45 minutes.

To start the second half, the Mountain Lions controlled possession, but was unable to crack the scoreless tie over the first five minutes.

After both teams went quiet on the offensive end for a time, senior midfielder Maxime Ramioulle gained possession near midfield and made a series of moves before finding freshman forward Matt Shelor who was sprinting toward goal on the left wing.

Shelor's shot rang off the left goal post before crossing the right side of the goal line for the game's only goal in the 64thminute. While Shelor's twin brother, Michael, started the game, Matt came on as a first-half sub and started the second half.

Over the remaining 25 minutes of the contest, King fired off six shots, but only one was on target as the Mountain Lions hung on for a 1-0 victory.

While KU owned a distinct advantage in total shots, Concord only trailed in corner kicks, 7-6.

Brown made six saves to record his second career shutout. Ramioulle's assist was his 30thcareer point—just the seventh player in program history to reach the milestone.

CU hosts Frostburg State 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Mountain East Conference opener for both teams.
