Concord Picks Up Road Win at Charleston, 2-0

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team used two first-half goals to slip past Charleston, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Welch Athletic Complex in a Mountain East Conference contest.

Charleston (4-4, 2-2 MEC) had three shots in the first 10 minutes, but only one was on goal. With CU (6-1, 2-1 MEC) controlling the possession, sophomore forward Leah Foster took a pass from freshman defender Zoe Belding and scored her fifth goal of the season to put Concord up 1-0 in the 16th minute.

From the time of Foster's goal until the 40th minute, just three shots were attempted by the two teams with junior midfielder Courtney Wallace tallying a shot that was saved in the 35th minute.

After entering the game as a substitute in the 30th minute, sophomore forward Olivia Medieros found the back of the net for her second goal of the season in the 42nd minute to extend the Mountain Lions' lead to 2-0.

In the second half, the CU defense remained strong as it only allowed three shots to Charleston, and just one was on target as Concord won by two goals.

The Mountain Lions owned a 10-8 edge in total shots and had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. CU took nine corner kicks compared to just two for Charleston. Freshman forward Rachel Bell and Foster each had three shots in the game.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Maher recorded her third shutout of the season by making two saves.

Concord welcomes Glenville State to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Thursday in what will be the start of six home games in a seven game span for CU.
