Concord Clipped at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team was edged 2-1 by West Virginia Wesleyan in Mountain East Conference play at Culpepper Stadium Wednesday night.

The Mountain Lions (5-1, 1-1 MEC) controlled play throughout as they outshot WVWC (2-3, 1-1 MEC) 21-6 during the contest.

Wesleyan struck first with a goal 73 seconds into the game after a throw in from the Bobcats bounced around in the box before finding the back of the net.

Bobcats' goalie Chelsea Hubner was forced to make five saves in the first 25 minutes as CU peppered the goal. Four different Mountain Lions combined for the five shots on target including a header attempt by junior midfielder Mira Kontio that Chelsea Hubner turned aside.

Perhaps the best chance for Concord in the first half came in the 41st minute when junior midfielder Yasmin Mosby rang a shot off the post. Despite all the shots from CU, it still trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The Maroon and Gray had five more shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half before tying the game in the 68th minute. After a corner kick by junior midfielder Courtney Wallace was cleared by the WVWC defense, junior defender Alyssa Mahar controlled the ball and slotted a pass to sophomore forward Leah Foster who pushed a shot past Hubner.

But the tie was short lived as Wesleyan went ahead 2-1 five minutes later. CU put three more shots on goal in the final 11 minutes, but could not tally a second goal to overtime.

Mosby had seven shots in the game with four being on goal. Freshman forward Rachel Bell added five total shots with being on target.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Maher had three saves in the game.

CU heads to Charleston 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
