Concord Edged by Davis & Elkins

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Davis & Elkins Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field.

The Senators (1-1, 1-1 MEC) controlled the early portion of the contest as they held Concord (2-1-1, 1-1-1 MEC) without a shot in the first half. However, the first score of the game was an own goal in the 27th minute that gave Davis & Elkins a 1-0 lead.

CU had the first shot on target of the second half as senior midfielder Courtney Skerritt ripped a shot that was stopped by the Senators' goalkeeper, Everton Carvalho, in the 50th minute of the contest. After the Mountain Lions played even with Davis & Elkins over the next 15 minutes, Concord had three looks at goal in the 67th and 68th minutes off of three consecutive corner kicks.

The second corner kick came into the box and deflected off freshman defender Daniel Haworth's chest and just went wide. The third corner kick found the head of freshman forward Matt Shelor who headed the ball over the crossbar.

In the 74th minute, senior midfielder Maxime Ramiolle blasted a shot on the ground from 20 yards away that was saved by Carvalho. Despite all the momentum for Concord, Davis & Elkins countered in the 87th minute to earn a corner that it scored off of to go up 2-0.

The Mountain Lions were even with  D&E on shots in the second half as each team recorded seven. Davis & Elkins held an edge in shots on goal (8-3) while also having more corners than CU, 12-5.

Skerritt had two of the seven shots for Concord. Junior goalkeeper Kyle Brown made six saves in the game.

The Mountain Lions will have a whole week off from games when they travel to Notre Dame 1:00 p.m. September 22.
