WINGATE, N.C. – Freshman forward
Rachel Bell scored two goals including the game winner in the 103
rd minute as the Concord University women's soccer team clipped Wingate Wednesday night in double overtime at Pride Park.
Concord (3-0) came back from an early second-half deficit to tie the game in the final 10 minutes, sending the contest into overtime. The Bulldogs (0-1) broke a 0-0 tie in the 61st minute with a header goal off a corner kicker.
The Mountain Lions tallied three shots after the Wingate goal, but only junior midfielder
Nina Perry's shot was on target in the 75
th minute. However, the shot was stopped by WU goalkeeper Abbey Frail.
In the 81
st minute, CU was able to break through as Bell spun at the top right corner of the penalty area and chipped a shot over Frail's head and into the top left corner of the net to tie the game.
Neither team got a clean look at goal after Bell's score as Wingate's corner kick in the last 10 seconds of regulation was cleared away by the defense.
Just one shot was recorded in the first overtime, sending the contest to a second extra session. The Bulldogs had two shots in the first two minutes of double overtime, including one that just cleared the crossbar. The third shot in double overtime was Bell's game-winning goal.
CU gained possession in the midfield area. As junior midfielder
Yasmin Mosby took a pass from about 20 yards away, she slotted a pass to Bell who rocketed a shot from about 15 yards away into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The two-goal effort was Bell's fifth and sixth goals of the season. Junior goalkeeper
Katie Maher made five saves in the contest as Concord was outshot 21-9 overall and 6-4 in shots on goals.
Mosby had three shots while both of Bell's shots results in goals.
The Mountain Lions host their home opener September 17 against King. The game will be the Alexis Walker Memorial Game—a member of the 2018 team that passed away in May 2019. All fans are encouraged to wear purple for epilepsy awareness.
