ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Concord University softball team will be traveling to Salem, Virginia to begin conference play for the Mountain East Conference Championship 2:30 p.m. Friday against Fairmont State.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 34-17 overall and finished second in the South Division with a 22-10 MEC mark.
The Fighting Falcons are 25-21 overall, finishing third in the North Division with a 19-13 record.

Junior utility and Mountain East Conference Player of the Year
Jenna Witt is leading the Mountain Lions with her batting average of .418. Witt also leads with her slugging percentage of .661. On her way to being the top player in the league in 2019, the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia native also finished top five in the conference in runs scored, RBI, doubles. Witt became the just the second player in program history to be named conference player of the year. Also on Wednesday, freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson was selected as the MEC Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in runs scored and triples and finishing third in batting average. Thompson and Witt are the only set of teammates in the conference with a batting average of .400 or better.

Cartney Schoolcraft who were both All-MEC Second Team selections. This spring marked the first time Concord has placed four or more players on the all-conference teams since five Mountain Lions made it in 2015.

START OF SOMETHING
CU swept Fairmont State during the second weekend of April making as they took the doubleheader, 4-1, 7-1. Junior pitcher/outfield
Darby Fitzpatrick and Thompson paced the offense during game one as they combined for three RBI.. During the second game of the doubleheader, sophomore utility
Skylar Jenkins hit her career-high of four RBI that also included her first career home run. Since the beginning of April, Jenkins has tallied 11 RBI of her 13 total for the season. Schoolcraft earned one of her eight April wins as she tossed a complete game against the Fighting Falcons and had seven strikeouts. Since previously meeting Fairmont State, Schoolcraft has made her mark as the leader of strikeouts in a single season with 148. Schoolcraft's total strikeouts for the season is second in the conference. Additionally, Schoolcraft has had strikeouts in double digits four times this season and currently has a ERA of 2.26, which is in the top ten of the MEC.

NEARING THE TOP
Not only has Schoolcraft set the single-season record for strikeouts, but she is also nearing the single-season record of 17 wins in program history. The Winfield, West Virginia native has 16 wins recorded for the season. A single win will place her tied for first with
Allie Reid's 17 wins in 2014. Speaking of records, Witt needs five hits to tie for second place in number of hits for a single season with
Alayna Furr's 2016 record. Witt starts the weekend with 69 hits. Furr also has the top single-season mark for hits with 80 during the 2017 campaign.
SETTING RECORDS
By sweeping West Virginia Wesleyan to conclude the regular season, Concord tied the program mark for the most overall wins with the 2015 squad that also won 34 games. Additionally, this is the first time in program history that the CU softball team has ever recorded more than 20 conference wins. The highest amount of conference games won in a single season was 19 from the 2015 season. The Mountain Lions have won 22 conference games during regular season play, which is now the newest record for most conference games won.
FAIRMONT STATE AT A GLANCE
Fairmont State's leading pitcher Hannah Absalom was recently named First Team All-MEC. She is second in the conference with her ERA of 1.37. Absalom and Schoolcraft are tied for second with number of wins with 16, along with Shepherd's Taylor Stocks.Absalom was the lone representative for FSU on the All-MEC Teams. Jenny Stubbs is the offensive leader for Fairmont State with a .309 average to go with 15 RBI. Courtney Worcester is the top RBI getter for the Fighting Falcons with 18 on the season.
NOTE: Concord will play either West Liberty or UVa.-Wise 7:30 p.m. Friday at the MEC Tournament.
