Concord Wins Two at Wheeling Jesuit, 5-0, 8-2

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept Wheeling Jesuit, 5-0 and 8-2, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the JB Chambers Complex.

CU improves to 22-15 on the season and 10-8 in the MEC. Wheeling Jesuit drops to 6-28 overall and 3-13 in the league.

Game 1: Concord 5 – Wheeling Jesuit 0
Concord scored all five of its runs in the first two innings as it cruised to a game one win.

Junior utility Jenna Witt got the scoring going for the Mountain Lions as she followed a single by freshman utility Sarah Thompson with her seventh home run of the season in the first inning.

Thompson was responsible for the third run as she singled back through the middle to drive in her sister, freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson, after she had tripled in the previous at-bat in the second. With Thompson and Witt in scoring position, senior utility Kylie Kent added to the second-inning CU rally as she bounced a base hit into right field to bring in both runners.

The lead was more than comfortable for junior pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick who limited the Cardinals to three hits in tossing her first shutout of the season and the fifth of her career. The Pocomoke City, Maryland native also retired 16 of the final 17 batters she faced in the contest including the last 10 consecutive.

Thompson, Witt and Kent combined to go 6-for-10 in the 2-3-4 spots of the order. Witt was on base in all four plate appearances.

Game 2: Concord 8 – Wheeling Jesuit 2
CU jumped on Wheeling Jesuit quickly again as it scored six runs through its first four at-bats on its way to a sweep.

Also like game, Witt produced the first RBI as she singled home L. Thompson in the first inning. S. Thompson was the run producer in a three-run second frame for the Mountain Lions. With two runners in scoring position, Thompson sent a double to the left center field gap to plate Fitzpatrick and freshman outfielder/shortstop Taylor Dickerson.

Up 4-0, a Wheeling Jesuit error aided the scoring of junior utility Amber Stokes in the fourth inning after she singled to start the inning. L. Thompson also came in the inning on a groundout to push Concord ahead 6-0.

Fitzpatrick recorded an RBI in the fifth and Witt added her third RBI of the game and fifth of the doubleheader to conclude the scoring for CU in the sixth.

Concord notched 14 hits in the nightcap as L. Thompson, Witt, Fitzpatrick and senior catcher/first baseman Lauren Blunt all had two. S. Thompson matched Witt's three RBI.

Fitzpatrick, L. Thompson and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft combined to allow two Wheeling Jesuit runs. Thompson (5-5) got the win in the circle as she tossed the middle three innings of the game.

While not a save chance, Schoolcraft recorded all six of her outs via the strikeout to end the game.
