WISE, Va. – The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader against UVa.-Wise Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Cavalier Field as UVa.-Wise (15-16, 9-7 MEC) won the first game 6-0 before CU (23-16, 11-9 MEC) rebounded to win game two, 10-0.
Game 1: UVa.-Wise 6 – Concord 0
The Cavaliers' Raychel Lapallo twirled a gem in the circle as she limited the Mountain Lions to one hit in the first game.
UVa.-Wise spread its runs out as they scored one run in each of its at-bats, including solo home runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.
Senior outfielder
Abby Beatty broke up Lapallo's no-hit bit with a one out single in the top of the sixth inning. Lapallo did walk seven Concord batters, including freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson three times, but CU was unable to push any runs across.
Junior pitcher/outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick (4-4) was the losing pitcher as she allowed all six runs.
Game 2: Concord 10 – UVa.-Wise 0 (Five Innings)
The Mountain Lions put eight runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning to turn a close game into a runaway win in the nightcap.
CU hit the bat rack quickly in game two as senior utility
Kylie Kent drove in Thompson with a two-out RBI single in the top of the first. And Concord doubled its lead in the fourth as sophomore catcher/utility
Kaitlyn Stewart scored on a groundout after she had drawn a walk earlier in the frame.
But in the fifth, Concord struck for eight runs using just four hits to produce the crooked number. After a groundout to start the inning for the Cavaliers' defense, the next eight CU batters reached base including Stewart drawing a bases loaded walk and sophomore utility
Skylar Jenkins driving in two runs with a single to left field. After another bases loaded walk—this time to Thompson—and a sacrifice fly by freshman utility
Sarah Thompson, junior utility
Jenna Witt capped the rally with a run-scoring hit that plated two Mountain Lions, sophomore outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale and L. Thompson.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft retired the side in order to complete her first career shutout and end the game early. Schoolcraft (9-5) struck out six batters in five innings as she gave up just three hits.
Jenkins and Witt paced the CU offense with two hits and two RBI each. Kent had a team-best three hits. Stewart and L. Thompson each scored twice in the contest.
Concord returns home for a conference doubleheader against Fairmont State 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
