ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team used strong pitching to sweep Fairmont State, 4-1 and 7-1, Saturday afternoon at the CU Softball Field in a pair of Mountain East Conference games.
CU improves to 24-15 overall and 13-9 in the conference. Fairmont State falls to 19-17 overall and 13-9 in the MEC.
Game 1: Concord 4 – Fairmont State 1
Concord broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth by plating two runs before adding an insurance run in the fifth as it went on to win game one.
The Fighting Falcons got on the board first with a first-inning run. However, the Mountain Lions responded in the third as freshman shortstop/outfielder
Taylor Dickerson stole second, and an error on the same play allowed junior pitcher/outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick to score. Fitzpatrick had sparked the rally with a leadoff single.
During its next at-bat, junior utility
Jenna Witt and senior utility
Kylie Kent walked and single to set up Fitzpatrick for an RBI chance. The Pocomoke City, Maryland native sent a triple to right field to score both runners, giving Concord a 3-1 edge.
CU added a run in the fifth as freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson had her own triple with one out. Thompson would race home on a sacrifice fly by freshman utility
Sarah Thompson.
Fitzpatrick earned the win to move to 5-4 on the season as she tossed the final four innings, allowing four scattered hits and striking out one batter. Fitzpatrick also paced the offense with two of the four hits in the game while tallying two RBI.
L. Thompson gave up a run on three hits while striking out two in the first three innings in the circle.
Game 2: Concord 7 – Fairmont State 1
The Mountain Lions used a four-run second inning to jump ahead of Fairmont State in game two on their way to a sweep.
Like game one, FSU scored a first -inning run, their only score of the game.
In the second, Kent and Fitzpatrick reached to the start inning before sophomore utility
Skylar Jenkins had two of her four RBI on the day, singling home both runners. With Jenkins on third and sophomore catcher/utility
Kaitlyn Stewart on second, sophomore outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale came up with a two-RBI to give CU a 4-1 edge.
The offense continued for Concord in the fifth as Jenkins led off the frame with her first career home run.
The Mountain Lions tacked on two more runs in the sixth as Fitzpatrick collected another RBI in the doubleheader, and Jenkins' groundout plated Kent.
After allowing three hits and the unearned run in the first, sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Cartney Schoolcraft limited Fairmont State to three hits over the next six innings as she tossed a complete game. The Winfield, West Virginia native struck out seven while allowing six total hits and an unearned run as she earned her 10
th win of the season.
Jenkins had two hits and four RBI. Bloomingdale was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI. Fitzpatrick and Kent each had two hits.
The Mountain Lions host nationally-ranked Shepherd 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the CU Softball Field.
