GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split the opening two games of its series with Glenville State Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Sue Morris Park. CU won the first game 12-3 before falling 3-2 in the second.
Game 1: Concord 12 – Glenville State 3
Concord (24-11, 14-8 MEC) plated five runs in the first inning to open up a gap the Pioneers (11-27, 6-16 MEC) were unable to close.
With a run already in on a bases-loaded walk to senior outfielder
Evan Webb, senior catcher
Jordan Clark blasted a grand slam to cap the five-run rally that had begun with two singles and a hit by pitch.
After the Pioneers picked up a run in the bottom of the second, junior catcher
Jakob Divers homered for the second time in three games as part of a three-run fourth inning to push the lead to 8-1.
GSC would threaten in the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out in an 8-2 game, however, senior pitcher
Will Guay allowed just one run to score on a sacrifice fly. CU added four runs in the top of the seventh to seal the game one victory.
Freshman catcher
Chance Davis and junior outfielders
Ryan Fralin and
Adam Linkous each had an RBI during the rally.
Guay improved to 4-3 as he tossed a complete game on the mound. The West Palm Beach, Florida native scattered eight hits and three runs while striking out six.
All nine Concord batters had a run, a hit or RBI in the game. Clark had two hits and four RBI while Divers and Linkous each had three hits.
Game 2: Glenville State 3 – Concord 2
Glenville State halted numerous CU scoring chances as it secured a split.
The Pioneers jumped up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-out single. However, freshman outfielder
Josh Adkins provided his own two-out single in the top of the second, scoring Clark, to even the score at 1-1. Clark had drawn a one-out walk earlier in the inning.
Another two-out single gave the Mountain Lions the lead in the fourth as Fralin drove in junior infielder
Nathan Neff to push CU ahead 2-1.
It appeared Concord may add to its lead in the fifth after back-to-back singles by Adkins and Linkous to lead off the inning, but GSC's Andrue Hughart escaped the jam by stranding both runners.
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth, Trevon Smith gave Glenville State a 3-2 edge with a two-run home run. CU was unable to produce a threat in the sixth, and Adkins' leadoff walk in the seventh was stranded to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Logan Morrison (5-3) was charged with the loss as he went five innings and gave up three runs. Morrison struck out four batters.
Adkins and Neff each had two hits in the contest.
Concord and Glenville State finish up their series 1:00 p.m. Monday.
