Concord Goes 1-1 at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team went 1-1 in two games at Glenville State Monday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play as CU (25-12, 15-9 MEC) won the first game 8-3 before the Pioneers (12-28, 7-17 MEC) took game two, 6-1.

Game 1: Concord 8 – Glenville State 3
The Mountain Lions opened up with three runs in the second and never looked back as they rolled to a game one victory.

Junior catcher Jakob Divers and senior outfielder Evan Webb reached base to start the second before Divers scored on senior catcher Jordan Clark's sacrifice fly. Webb followed on junior infielder Nathan Neff's run-scoring single before Neff raced in on a two-out double by freshman outfielder Josh Adkins.

CU added two more runs in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Webb and Clark while junior outfielder Ryan Fralin got down a bunt to plate Clark, extending the Concord lead to 5-1.

The final three runs came off of Clark's bat by way of a three-run home run in the seventh. GSC pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning, and had the bases loaded before junior outfielder Adam Linkous came in to earn his fourth save of the season with a strikeout to end the game.

Linkous saved the game for senior pitcher Troy Beckner who improved to 5-1 after tossing 6.2 innings. Beckner recorded 10 strikeouts and gave up three runs.

Clark drove in five runs. Neff had four hits while Webb added three.

Game 2: Glenville  State 6 – Concord 1
Concord's potent offense was limited to four hits by Glenville State's Jose Rodriguez in the nightcap as the Pioneers split the series, 2-2.

GSC got a run in the first and another in the second to open up a 2-0 lead before the Mountain Lions sliced the deficit in half on a fourth-inning single by Concord that scored Webb. But, the Pioneers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-1.

After Glenville State pushed across another run in the fifth, CU appeared poised to chip into the deficit in the sixth. However, Rodriguez escaped a bases-loaded jam to keep the score 5-1. The Pioneers plated a sixth run in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin of victory.

Clark had two hits in the second game. Freshman pitcher Sidney Willis (1-2) was tagged with the loss as he pitched four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out four.

Concord travels to Ohio Valley for a non-conference doubleheader 1:00 p.m. Tuesday
