Concord Survives Game of Runs, Advances to MEC Semifinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team held off UVa.-Wise, 76-62, Thursday afternoon in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Quarterfinal Round at WesBanco Arena.

With the win, CU (23-6) advances to the MEC Semifinals where it will play Charleston 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Mountain Lions raced out to a quick 8-2 lead, but UVa.-Wise (13-16) finished the quarter on a 20-7 run to grab a 22-15 lead after 10 minutes. The Cavaliers' surge continued into the second quarter as they led 25-17 with 6:55 remaining until halftime.

But, CU finished the second quarter strong as it outscored UVa.-Wise 21-3 over the final seven minutes to carry a 38-28 lead into halftime. Incorporated in that run was junior guard Madison May's personal 8-0 run. Senior guard Andreanna Pool had back-to-back buckets while May capped the run with a turnaround jumper along the baseline as the halftime horn sounded.

The momentum lasted into the first five minutes of the third quarter as Concord started the period on a 16-6 spurt. Sophomore forward Riley Fitzwater and Pool each scored four points. The run was capped by sophomore forward Keely Lundy's second three-pointer of the game to push CU's lead to a game-high 20 points, 54-34. Overall, the run for the Mountain Lions was 37-9 going back to the second quarter.

However, the Cavaliers ripped off their own run as they went on a 23-6 spurt and cut CU's lead to a single possession, 60-57, with 6:30. On the other end, Pool connected on her only three –pointer of the game to end the UVa.-Wise comeback.

May flirted with a triple-double as she posted 23 points on 6-for-12 shooting and a 10-for-14 effort from the foul line. May also had nine rebounds and six steals.

Pool finished with 16 points. Fitzwater went for 12 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Fellow sophomore forward Keely Lundy and Tamra Scott each scored eight points while combining for 11 rebounds.

The Mountain Lions held UVa.-Wise to 36.7 percent shooting (22-for-60) while recording a shooting percentage of 46.6 percent (27-for-58).
