Concord Drops Games at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost two games to Charleston on the road in Mountain East Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Charleston 4 – Concord 3
The Golden Eagles (14-15, 6-6 MEC) plated all four runs in the bottom of the seventh as they walked off for a game one win.

CU (19-12, 7-5 MEC) took an early 1-0 lead as it loaded the bases in the first with two outs and a passed ball allowed freshman utility Sarah Thompson to score.

The slim lead held up as junior outfielder/pitcher Darby Fitzpatrick only allowed two UC base runners past first base in the first five innings. The Mountain Lions provided some run support to Fitzpatrick in the top of the fifth.

Thompson and freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson both reached base to the start the inning before junior utility Jenna Witt and senior utility Kylie Kent followed with RBI singles, giving CU a 3-0 advantage.

Up by the same margin heading to the bottom of the seventh, Concord watched the first three batters reach for UC before Fitzpatrick induced a groundout for the first out. After a pitching change, Charleston's Karli Pinkerton reached base before an error tied the game at 3-3. The next batter, Kendal Marshall, sent a double to right field as CU fell by a run.

Fitzpatrick, Kent and Witt all finished with two hits in the contest. Fitzpatrick (2-2) tossed 6.1 innings as she allowed three earned runs on five hits.

Game 2: Charleston 3 – Concord 2
Concord's seventh-inning rally came up just short as it fell by a one run in the nightcap.

Charleston's Carly Lucas and Concord's sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft were locked up in an early duel as the two offenses combined for just five hits in the first five innings. The Golden Eagles were able to scratch across a run in the third to grab a 1-0 advantage.

UC added two more runs on a home run in the bottom of the sixth.

However, the Mountain Lions began to mount a comeback in the seventh. Witt and Kent began the frame with back-to-back singles before moving into scoring position with a groundout. After a strikeout took CU down to its final out, junior utility Amber Stokes reached on an error to keep the rally alive.

Kent raced in to trim the deficit to 3-2 after Witt had scored on the error. But, Lucas was able to induce a groundout to end the game.

Concord was limited to three hits in the contest. Schoolcraft (8-3) had seven strikeouts in six innings as she yielded three runs on five hits.

The Mountain Lions host UVa.-Wise 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.
