SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped two games at Shepherd, 7-0 and 6-4, Friday afternoon at Fairfax in Mountain East Conference play.
Game 1: Shepherd 7 – Concord 0
Shepherd's Mitchell Wilson limited the Concord (12-7, 5-5 MEC) offense to two hits in the contest.
Sophomore pitcher
Logan Morrison used the defense behind him in the first two innings to escape a couple early jams. Senior catcher
Jordan Clark threw out a base runner at second to end a SU (17-9, 8-2 MEC) threat in the first inning. Concord's middle infield turned a double play to end another scoring chance in the Shepherd second.
However, the Rams plated three runs in the third inning to go up 3-0.
Shepherd added four more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 advantage.
Morrison (3-2) went 4.2 innings as he allowed seven runs while striking out four hitters.
Game 2: Shepherd 6 – Concord 4
The Rams scored six of the final seven runs of the contest as they rallied to take both games.
CU opened the scoring as sophomore infielder
Anthony Stehlin scored on a sacrifice fly from senior infielder
Brett Simmons in the first inning.
Concord added two more runs in the second inning. First, the Mountain Lions successfully executed a double steal as junior catcher
Jakob Divers raced home after singling to start the frame. Later in the inning, junior outfielder
Ryan Fralin scored on a double from fellow junior outfielder
Adam Linkous.
Shepherd would homer in the bottom of the fourth to cut CU's lead to 3-2, but senior outfielder
Evan Webb answered with a run-scoring double in the fifth to stretch the lead back to two runs. SU came up with three runs bottom of the fifth to go-ahead and scratched across a run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
Stehlin finished with a game-high three hits as the Mountain Lions outhit Shepherd, 8-7. Divers collected two hits in the contest.
Senior pitcher
Troy Beckner tossed the first four innings as he struck out three batters and gave up three runs. Freshman pitcher
Sidney Willis (0-1) was charged with the loss in his 0.1 inning of relief.
The Mountain Lions stay on the race to face Fairmont State 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
