Concord Sweeps Fairmont State, 7-2, 10-7

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Fairmont State, 7-2 and 10-7, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

The Mountain Lions improve to 14-7 overall and 7-5 against MEC foes. FSU drops to 14-12 this season and 5-7 versus the MEC.

Game 1: Concord 7 – Fairmont State 2
Concord scored at least one run in each of the final four innings of the game to undo a 1-1 tie in the fourth.

With the score deadlocked, senior catcher Jordan Clark scored on a Fairmont State error in the fourth after he reached base with a one-out walk and was moved along on a single before the error.

The momentum carried over to the fifth for CU as sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Stehlin then stole second base before junior catcher Jakob Divers brought Stehlin in with one of his four RBI in the contest. Divers scored later in the inning as well.

The Fighting Falcons cut into Concord's lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Mountain Lions strung together five hits in the top of the sixth that included Divers recording another RBI.
Divers and junior outfielder Adam Linkous each brought in a run in a two-run seventh as CU secured a game one win.

The first run for Concord came courtesy of Divers who shot a double down left field line, allowing Linkous to open the scoring in the first.

Divers finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI. Linkous, Stehlin and senior outfielder Evan Webb all finished with two hits.

Senior pitcher Will Guay tossed six innings with six strikeouts as he allowed two runs on six hits while improving to 2-2 on the season.

Game 2: Concord 10 – Fairmont State 7
Like game one, CU broke up a tie game in the middle innings as it went on to sweep the Fighting Falcons.

Down 2-1 in the fourth, Clark led off the inning with a double to right field and scored later in the frame to tie the game.

Clark would be right in the middle of a four-run fifth inning that gave Concord the lead for good. After senior infielder Brett Simmons and Stehlin both reached base to begin the inning, Webb brought both home with a single into center field. Two batters later, Clark sent his second home run of the season over the right field fence to push CU ahead 6-2.

However, Fairmont State rallied itself in the bottom of the frame to get within 6-5 of the Mountain Lions.

But, Concord had its own answer as junior outfielder Ryan Fralin, junior infielder Nathan and Simmons all add RBI in a four-run sixth that saw CU send 10 hitters to the plate.

FSU scored twice in the seventh, but Linkous prevented further scoring in relif.

The Mountain Lions pounded out 13 hits as Clark led the way with three to go along with two RBI. Fralin, Linkous and Simmons each added two hits. At the top of the order, Linkous and Simmons combined to go 4-for-8 with three runs scored.

Junior pitcher Trent Abernathy moved to 3-0 on the season by tossing 4.1 innings while striking out six and allowing four earned runs.

CU hosts Salem 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson Field.
