Concord Rallies Back to Win at Winston-Salem State, 7-4

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. – The Concord University baseball team earned a non-conference road win, 7-4, over Winston-Salem State at Rich Park Tuesday night.

The Mountain Lions (12-5) overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring four runs in the sixth inning to pick up the win. Senior infielder Brett Simmons led off the frame with a single. After a strikeout by WSSU (20-11) pitcher Jalen Scott, senior outfielder Evan Webb and junior catcher Jakob Divers followed with base hits to load the bases for sophomore outfielder Ryan Fralin who sent a double to center field to push Concord back in front, 4-3.

Fralin scored the final of the four runs in the sixth as he followed an RBI groundout by racing home on a wild pitch from Scott.

The Rams appeared poised to draw closer in the seventh inning. Down 6-4, Winston-Salem State put the tying run in scoring position with two outs, but freshman pitcher Sidney Willis got the final batter he faced in his two innings of relief to line out to sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin at shortstop to end the threat.

Webb launched his first home run of the season to pad the CU lead to 7-4 in the top of the eighth before junior outfielder Adam Linkous came in and collected his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Mountain Lions jumped out early as Simmons homered for the second time in three games to give Concord a 2-0 lead in the first inning. WSSU responded a run in the bottom of the first and took the lead in the third inning with two scores.

Junior pitcher Bryson Booher (1-0) tossed six quality innings as he allowed three earned runs on six scattered hits while striking out two hitters.

Simmons and Webb paced the offense as each had two hits. Fralin and Simmons added two RBI apiece.
