Concord Welcomes Notre Dame, Urbana to Anderson Field

ATHENS, W.Va. –
The Concord University baseball team looks to bounce back after a midweek loss to Salem when hosts Urbana 1:00 p.m. Saturday and Notre Dame 1:00 p.m. Sunday in a pair of Mountain East Conference doubleheaders at Anderson Field.

RECORDS
CU is 8-4 this season and started the MEC schedule at 2-2.
Urbana is 2-12 overall and is still looking for its first conference win at 0-4.
Notre Dame sports a record of 7-12 overall and is 1-3 in the MEC.

FINDING THE GROOVE
Sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin enters the weekend with a nine-game hitting streak. During that time he has seen his average climb from .231 to a current team-best of .390. Of the 15 total hits the Montclair, Virginia native over the last nine games, six have gone for extra bases including his first career home run at Wheeling Jesuit Saturday. Meanwhile, junior infielder Nathan Neff sports a batting average of .389 and has hit safely in nine of 12 games this season. The duo is seventh and eighth in the MEC in average. Senior infielder Brett Simmons has also been on a roll as of late as he has hit safely in seven straight games.

SURE HANDED
The Mountain Lions lead the conference in fielding percentage through 12 games as they are fielding it at a .964 rate, .02 points ahead of Notre Dame. In 10 games behind the plate, senior catcher Jordan Clark has yet to commit an error in 93 chances while also throwing out 4-of-8 attempted base stealers. The middle infield of Stehlin and Simmons have committed just three combined errors in 81 chances, a fielding percentage of .962. In the last five games, CU has committed just two errors.

COMEBACK KIDS
During its four-game road trip at Urbana and Notre Dame last season, Concord went 3-1 with a sweep of Urbana before splitting two games with NDC. In two of the wins, the Mountain Lions found themselves down twice going to their final at-bat. Trailing 4-3 in the seventh to Urbana, senior outfielder Evan Webb provided the tying run to force extra innings where junior outfielder Adam Linkous scored the game-winning run. At Notre Dame, Concord was faced with a 5-1 deficit in the seventh before rattling off a 10-run frame to win 11-5.

NOT FEELING SO BLUE
A few CU players will enjoy seeing both Urbana and Notre Dame this weekend. Linkous went 5-for-10 over the final three games of last season's road trip. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Troy Beckner has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts versus NDC—covering 13 innings—while striking out 10 batters. In six career games versus Urbana, Clark is batting .478 (11-for-23) with two home runs, two doubles and 15 RBI.

PITCHING A PLENTY
Concord and Notre Dame are two of three teams in the MEC sporting an ERA under five. The Mountain Lions have a team ERA of 4.01, second in the league. Meanwhile, NDC is third with an ERA of 4.78. Sophomore pitcher Logan Morrison (2.25), Beckner (2.81) are fifth and ninth in the MEC in ERA among pitchers that have tossed at least 15 innings. NDC's Tyler Shoaff is third in the MEC in strikeouts with 35 while Concord's senior pitcher Will Guay has 24 strikeouts in 17 innings this season. Kenny Pierson of Notre Dame is just ahead of Guay with 25 strikeouts in 31 innings.

URBANA AT A GLANCE
Robbie Guerrero is tied for first in the conference with seven doubles. Guerrero is hitting .304 with 11 RBI. Griffin Stevens complements Guerrero with a .405 average and nine runs scored. Urbana has won just one of its last five games, but four of those five games have been decided by two runs or less.

NOTRE DAME AT A GLANCE
Zach Santoro, who has been the MEC Player of the Week once this year, is batting .342 with two home runs and 13 RBI. Joining Pierson and Shoaff on the pitching staff is Todd Marshall who has yet to start a game but has an ERA of 2.25 with 23 strikeouts in 16 innings. Joseph Paskell is hitting .400 with one home run and 11 RBI in 2019.
