WISE, Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team controlled UVa.-Wise throughout Saturday afternoon's Mountain East Conference game at the Prior Center as it picked up a 75-65 win.
Down 21-19 with 7:27 left in the second quarter, Concord (22-6, 17-5 MEC) finished the first half on a 14-6 run and never trailed again in the game. Sophomore forward 
Tamra Scott started the run with six straight points while junior forward 
Madison May closed up the spurt with four straight points in the final 1:27 of the first half.
The Mountain Lions carried a 33-27 lead into halftime.
The second-quarter surge continued into the third quarter as CU opened up its largest lead of the game—13 points, 48-35, after a three-pointer from freshman forward 
Maggie Guynn at the 1:46 mark of the period.
However, UVa.-Wise (13-15, 11-11) would not go away quietly in the fourth quarter. With Concord leading 64-53 with 4:11 remaining in the contest, the Cavaliers closed to within five points on two occasions down the stretch of the game including trimming the CU lead to 70-65 with 37 seconds left. But, Concord went 5-of-6 at the foul line to seal the game.
Guynn ended the contest with a career-best 21 points on 5-for-9 shooting a 7-of-8 display from the foul line. The Narrows, Virginia native also matched her career high in made three-pointers with four.
May scored 12 of her 16 points after halftime including nine in the four quarter. Senior guard 
Andreanna Pool notched 13 points.
In the first half, sophomore forward 
Riley Fitzwater became the all-time blocks leader at Concord and now has 227 in her career.
By winning Saturday, Concord clinched the number three seed in the upcoming Mountain East Conference Tournament and will face UVa.-Wise in the quarterfinal round.  More information will be released about the MEC Tournament late Saturday or Sunday.
