Concord Splits Against West Liberty

WASHINGTON, Pa.  – The Concord University baseball team went 1-1 against West Liberty Sunday afternoon at Wild Things Park in Mountain East Conference action.

The Mountain Lions are now 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the league while West Liberty is 3-13 this season and also 2-2 in the MEC.

Game 1: West Liberty 3 – Concord 1
After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Hilltoppers held off Concord for the remainder of the game.

The lone Concord run came in the third inning as sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin singled and stole second with one out before scoring on a base knock by senior infielder Brett Simmons. CU threatened again in the fourth as junior outfielders Ryan Fralin and Adam Linkous both singled and converted a double steal with two outs, but both were left stranded.

In the seventh, Concord got the tying run to the plate after Linkous reached base to start the inning. However, WLU's Tyler Blomquist worked around Linkous to finish off his complete-game effort.

Senior pitcher Will Guay (0-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Mountain Lions as he gave up three runs on four hits and struck out six in his own complete game on the mound.

CU was limited to four hits in the contest.

Stehlin, Simmons and junior catcher Jakob Divers all got on base to start the frame before senior outfielder Evan Webb brought in two runs with a single. Divers crossed later in the inning on a fielder's choice to give CU a 6-2 advantage.

West Liberty got to within 6-4 in the sixth inning, but freshman pitcher Sidney Willis escaped further damage by getting the potential tying run to fly out to end the threat. Linkous tossed a perfect seventh inning to secure his first save of the year and sophomore pitcher Logan Morrison's third win.
