ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team begins Mountain East Conference play 2:00 p.m. Saturday with a doubleheader against West Virginia State and continues 1:00 p.m. Sunday in two games versus Charleston at the CU Softball Field.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions went 5-3 during The Spring Games in Florida and starts conference play with a mark of 8-7.
West Virginia State is 7-4, but has lost three of its last four contests.
Charleston was also at The Spring Games where it went 1-5 and starts the MEC slate at 5-8.
RIDING THE WAVE

Jenna Witt brings a 10-game hitting streak into play on Saturday as her last hitless game was on February 16 against Erskine. The Harpers Ferry, West Virginia native has seen her average spike from .286 to .360. The hitting streak includes four multi-hit games for Witt, and she has collected five extra-base hits since February 27.

Sarah Thompson have been mainstays atop the Concord batting order. The Thompson twins are each batting .390 (16-for-41) while Witt is hitting the aforementioned .360. Junior pitcher/outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick checks in right behind at .359. The Thompsons and Witt have appeared in the one, two or three spots in the batting order a combined 39 time this season. The trio of bats along with Fitzpatrick is helping pace CU to the second-best batting average in the conference at .314. The quartet of players have also combined to score more than half of Concord's runs (38 of 74) this season.
HOT START
L. Thompson carries a 13-inning scoreless streak into MEC play as the last time she allowed a run was on February 16 against Erskine. Â Over that time, she allowed just five hits while striking 21 batters. Thompson struck out seven batters each against Salem, Nyack and Indiana (Pa.), and has lowered her ERA from 6.63 to 2.71 as well.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
While S. Thompson and Fitzpatrick each have nine RBI, the Mountain Lions have eight players with at least five RBI this season. The next closest teams in the MEC with as many players that have five or more RBI are Charleston and Shepherd each with five players. OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Concord started the MEC schedule 4-0 last season as it completed sweeps of both West Virginia State and Charleston. The Mountain Lions shutout WVSU in both games last season as it collected 1-0 and 4-0 wins. Fitzpatrick tossed a complete-game shutout of the Yellow Jackets as she scattered six hits and struck out three. For the Pocomoke City, Maryland native it was her second career shutout. Against Charleston, Witt was a combined 5-for-8 with four RBI and three doubles as CU won 6-2 and 8-4. Witt has a team-best five doubles this season and 39 for her career. Witt is vying to become the fifth player in program history with 40 or more two-base hits.
WEST VIRGINIA STATE AT A GLANCE
All 11 of the Yellow Jackets' games have been neutral contests as they are most recently coming off a two-game split against Bloomsburg in Glenville, West Virginia. Brittany Allison is batting .452 with three home runs and 10 RBI. Allison is also tied for the team lead with three doubles. In just seven games, Kasey Murphy has three home runs and 12 RBI. West Virginia State is hitting .329 as a team, first in the MEC. Emily Thompson is 3-1 in the circle, having collected 25 strikeouts in 24 innings.
CHARLESTON AT A GLANCE
After defeating Lock Haven, 4-0, to start The Spring Games, Charleston lost five straight including a 10-1 loss and 14-1 setback against Northwood and Sioux Falls. Haleigh Christopher—the MEC Freshman of the Year from 2017—has a team-best 13 RBI while hitting .306 this season. Kendal Marshall has six extra-base hits while hitting .462. Despite a .277 batting average, UC's team ERA is just 4.79 and has allowed 22 extra-base hits in 80 innings of work.
