RECORDS
CU is 6-1 this season behind the strength of six consecutive victories.
Wheeling Jesuit has a record of 1-9.
Meanwhile, West Liberty is 1-11.
MARCHING INTO PLAY
Since falling in the season opener against Millersville, the Mountain Lions have rattled off six straight wins. Winning in the March is something CU has become accustomed to as it recorded nine consecutive wins from March 10-25 of last season. Included in last year's win streak were sweeps of Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty. Dating back to the 2017 season, Concord is 26-10 in March.
BALANCING THE SCALES
Through seven games, the Mountain Lions have had success both at the plate and on the mound. Concord is the only team in the conference batting above .300--.319—and the only team with an ERA below four—3.26. Junior infielder
Nathan Neff is fourth in the MEC in early batting average at .450. Neff has three multi-hit games after having nine multi-hit games in 49 contests last season. Senior catcher
Jordan Clark and junior catcher
Jakob Divers have each hit safely in the first seven games. The duo is also tied with sophomore infielder
Anthony Stehlin for the team lead in RBI at eight. On the mound, Concord is the only team in the MEC that have three pitchers that have tossed at least 10 innings and have an ERA below 2.5. Sophomore pitcher
Logan Morrison leads the group with an ERA of 1.64. Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Troy Beckner and senior pitcher
Will Guay have an ERA of 2.25 and 2.45, respectively.
LIMITED ACCESS
CU took a pair of 3-1 wins from Wheeling Jesuit last season at Anderson Field behind stellar pitching performances from junior pitcher
Trent Abernathy and Guay. Guay set his career high in strikeouts with 10 against Cardinals as he scattered four hits and an unearned run in a complete-game effort. Abernathy mirrored the effort by fanning nine WJU batters in seven innings. Abernathy also gave up four hits and an unearned run. The win for Abernathy was his first of five conference wins in 2018. On the following day, Beckner pitched his fourth career and only shutout of the 2018 season by picking up a 3-0 win over West Liberty. The Roanoke, Virginia native added nine more strikeouts in his performance.
WALK-OFF WINNER
In its six-game winning streak, Concord had a 7-6 walk-off win over Ohio Valley as senior infielder
Brett Simmons drove in the game-winning runs. For Simmons, it was his second career walk-off hit with the other coming last season against WLU on a two-run, game-ending single. While it wasn't credited as a walk-off hit, senior outfielder
Evan Webb essentially had a game-ending hit versus Wheeling Jesuit last season. With CU down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth of a seven-inning game, Webb blasted a three-run home run to aide a Concord win.
MILESTONE MOMENT
Beckner enters the weekend eight strikeouts shy of 200 for his career. He would become the third player in program history with 200 strikeouts. Additionally, Beckner is only 23 strikeouts shy of becoming the all-time leader at CU. Meanwhile, Clark hit his 28
th career home run on Wednesday versus Davis & Elkins to move into a tie for fifth with
Joey Miller for fifth all-time at Concord.
WHEELING JESUIT AT A GLANCE
The Cardinals are under the direction of first-year head coach and former West Virginia Wesleyan standout Ryan Lewicki. Wheeling Jesuit's lone win on the season came against the University of Mary in Auburndale, Florida. Dom Davis is batting a team-high .444 in nine games this season. Tanner Evans has seven strikeouts and an ERA of 2.16 in 8.1 innings.
WEST LIBERTY AT A GLANCE
West Liberty's only win of the season came in its last game—a 5-3 win over Pitt-Johnstown. Catcher Dalton Davis is batting .282 with four doubles, one home run and nine RBI. All-MEC outfielder Coby Eckstein has recorded seven RBI this season, but is batting just .245. WLU faces UVa.-Wise Saturday afternoon before playing Concord Sunday.
