Concord Wins Two over IUP, Jefferson at Spring Game

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concord University softball team got two wins on Sunday at The Spring Games as it defeated Indiana (Pa.) and Jefferson to improve to 7-4 on the season.

Game 1: Concord 8 – Indiana (Pa.) 5
The Mountain Lions scored six runs in the sixth inning to untie a 2-2 contest.

Run-scoring hits from senior outfielder Abby Beatty and junior utility Jenna Witt in the first inning gave CU an early lead. And the Crimson Hawks were held at bay until they were finally able to answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to square the game at 2-2.

However, Concord had its biggest offensive inning to date during its trip in Florida as it rallied for six runs in the next half inning. Back-to-back one-out errors allowed CU to have traffic on the bases. Three batters later, sophomore catcher/utility Kaitlyn Stewart drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run. With the bases still full and two outs, junior pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick unloaded the bases with a double to left field. After a walk to freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson, freshman utility Sarah Thompson capped the rally with her own double, a two-run knock to center field.

IUP scored two runs in the sixth and added a third in the seventh, but Concord closed out the contest as sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft struck out the game's final batter.

CU scored its eight runs on just seven hits as senior catcher/first baseman Lauren Blunt recorded two hits.

L. Thompson (3-1) tossed a one hitter through four innings before giving way to Schoolcraft who earned her first save as a Mountain Lions. Thompson had seven strikeouts over the four innings.

Game 2: Concord 4 – Jefferson 0
Four runs of support was plenty for sophomore pitcher Tara Williams who tossed her first career complete game shutout.

The first two runs for the Mountain Lions came from Blunt by way of a two-run single in the third inning. The Thompson sisters came around to score on Blunt's hit as they had led off the frame with back-to-back singles of their own.

Blunt was in the middle of a fifth-inning rally as she followed Witt's run-scoring double with her own two-base RBI hit to push CU out front 4-0.

Williams (1-1) struck out just two batters while giving up five hits in her shutout. However, she only allowed three runners to reach second base in the contest.

Blunt had two more hits and three RBI in the contest. L. Thompson and Witt also had two hits in the second game of the day.
