CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concord University softball team lost twice on Monday at The Spring Games as Lake Erie and Slippery Rock bested Concord.
CU (7-6) fell in the first contest of the morning to Lake Erie, 9-2, before SRU grabbed a 2-0 win. The defeats ended a six-game win streak for the Maroon and Gray.
Game 1: Lake Erie 9 – Concord 2
Five runs were scored between the two teams in the first inning before LEC rallied for four runs in the top of the second to create separation.
The Mountain Lions answered Lake Erie's three-run top of the first with two runs in the bottom half as junior utility
Jenna Witt sent her first home run of the season over the fence, scoring freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson.
But, the Storm increased their lead to 7-2 with four runs in the second inning, and added two runs in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
Along with Witt's home run, senior utility
Kylie Kent added two hits in the setback.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Williams (1-2) allowed seven runs.
Game 2: Slippery Rock 2 – Concord 0
The second game of the day turned into a pitching duel between Concord's
Laura Thompson and Slippery Rock's Cammie Shumaker.
The opposing pitchers combine to give up just six hits through the first four innings of play while striking out seven combined over that stretch.
The Rock broke through for two runs in the top of the fifth inning to get out to a 2-0 advantage. In its final three at-bats, CU was only able to produce two hits and neither runner made it into scoring position as SRU held on for a 2-0 win.
L. Thompson was the hard luck loser (3-2) as she tossed a complete game. She allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three batters.
Witt paced the Mountain Lions at the plate with two hits.
Concord finishes up The Spring Games with contest against Kutztown and Millersville starting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
