ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 15-2 run in the second quarter and fell to West Liberty 89-64 Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center during Mountain East Conference play.
The Mountain Lions (17-5, 12-4 MEC) trailed the Hilltoppers (15-7, 12-4 MEC) by two points four different times in the first quarter but never took the lead.
Concord faced a seven point deficit at the beginning of the second quarter but was able to close the gap as freshman forward
Maggie Guynn scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 27-27. The Hilltoppers then went on a 15-2 run, leading Concord 42-29 by the end of the second quarter.
The Hilltoppers led the Mountain Lions by as much as 18 points in the third quarter, but CU was able to work the deficit down to 13 trailing 63-50 by the end of the third after a fast break layup from junior forward
Madison May to end the period.
A Guynn jumper got Concord within 10 points, 65-55, with 7:50 left, but the Mountain Lions were never able to work their deficit under 10 points for the remainder of the game.
May scored 19 points and had seven rebounds. May needs just three points to reach her 1,000
th collegiate point.
Other double-figure scorers included senior guard
Andreanna Pool with 16, Guynn with 14, and senior guard
Emily Boothe with 10.
Sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater led Concord in rebounds with 21 rebounds while also recording four blocks. Saturday was Fitzwater's fourth career 20-rebound game.
Concord travels to Shepherd University for a Mountain East Conference road contest 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
