Concord Rallies Past Shepherd, 80-74, May Scores 1,000th Career Point

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team erased a double-digit third quarter deficit as it down Shepherd 80-74 at the Butcher Center Thursday night in Mountain East Conference action.

Down 51-40 with 2:38 left in the third period, the Mountain Lions (18-5, 13-4 MEC) scored eight of the final 10 points of the quarter to trail by just five, 53-48. Freshman forward Maggie Guynn had four points while senior guard Emily Boothe and junior forward Madison May each hit a pair of free throws.

Unfazed by CU's run, Shepherd (11-12, 8-9 MEC) ran it lead back to nine points, 62-53, with less than seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. But that's when Concord took control of the game, ripping off an 18-4 run. Senior guard Andreanna Pool keyed the run with eight points, and sophomore forward Keely Lundy put an exclamation point on the spurt with a left wing three-pointer at the 1:42 mark—one of three-pointers for Lundy in the contest.

The Mountain Lions went 7-of-8 at the foul line in the 38 seconds including May hitting all six attempts as CU put Shepherd away for the six-point win.

Until taking a 66-64 edge with 2:46 remaining in the fourth, the last time Concord had led was at 6-4. The Rams led by 10 at halftime, 37-27, and built their advantage up to as much as 12 points in the third quarter.

With a foul shot at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter, May became the 17th player in program history to score 1,000 points in a career. She finished the contest with a game-high 19 points while grabbing 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. The Athens, West Virginia native went 13-for-15 at the foul line.

Pool scored 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter while also adding three steals. Sophomore forward Tamra Scott came off the bench to supply her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Boothe rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Concord continues its road trip at Fairmont State 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
