Concord Stymies Fairmont State for 79-67 Win

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team held Fairmont State to four points in the second quarter on its way to a 79-67 win Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Joe Retton Arena.

Holding a 24-18 lead after the first quarter that saw Concord (19-5, 14-4 MEC) shoot 55.6 percent (10-for-18), the Mountain Lions allowed FSU (10-14, 7-11 MEC) to make just one field goal in the second minute as Fairmont State shot just 6.7 percent (1-for-15) from the floor.

At halftime, Concord held a 39-22 lead on the Fighting Falcons.

But, FSU worked the Concord lead down to seven points, 53-46, heading to the fourth quarter.

A Fairmont State three-pointer with 8:41 remaining in the contest trimmed the Mountain Lions' lead to four points. However, freshman forward Maggie Guynn buried one of her three fourth-quarter triples to push Concord back out front 58-51.

The Fighting Falcons did not go away quietly as it kept CU from extending the lead into double figures until Guynn connected on another three-point to push the Mountain Lions in front, 68-56, with 5:18 left in the fourth.

From there, FSU was unable to get the lead back under 10 points for the final five minutes.

Concord got a balanced effort as four players finished in double figures led by career-high 18 points from Guynn. Senior guard Andreanna Pool matched Guynn's 18 points as she finished 7-for-14 from the field.

Senior guard Emily Boothe added 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and also dished out five assists. Sophomore forward Riley Fitzwater rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Though only scoring five points, junior forward Madison May grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds and had five assists.

CU held a 39-27 advantage in rebounding and shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field.
