ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team had a 91-79 setback against West Virginia State in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center Wednesday night.
The Mountain Lions (21-6, 16-5 MEC) shot nearly 48 percent in the first quarter as they held a 22-20 advantage through 10 minutes. However, West Virginia State (7-20, 6-15 MEC) buried 60 percent of its shots (12-of-20) in the second quarter as it took a 49-43 lead into halftime.
The surge continued for the Yellow Jackets in the third quarter as they pulled away from Concord and worked their lead up to 69-52 with 2:55 left in the period. But, CU finished the third quarter strong as it outscored WVSU 15-5 in the final 2:55 to trim the deficit to seven points after senior guard
Andreanna Pool made three foul shots at the end of the third.
West Virginia State banged in a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to push the lead back to double figures. Sophomore forward

Madison May made consecutive shots to get the deficit to six, 77-71, with 8:51 remaining.
However, the Mountain Lions went nearly five minutes before their next points. By the time May hit a layup with 3:59 left, CU was down 83-73 and was only able to work the deficit to nine points for the remainder of the game.
In her final game at the Carter Center, senior guard
Emily Boothe had a career night as she scored 20 points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. The Riner, Virginia native added six assists and three steals.
May contributed 17 points and seven rebounds while Pool added 14 points.
Fitzwater grabbed 10 rebounds in the defeat.
Concord looks to bounce 2:00 p.m. Saturday at UVa.-Wise.
