Concord Drops Games to Erskine, Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Concord University softball team fell in a pair of games at the Bearcat/Fleet Invite Saturday at Lander University.

The Mountain Lions (1-4) lost in eight innings to Lander, 8-7. In the nightcap, Concord fell 10-2 to Erskine.

Game 1: Lander 8 – Concord 7 (Eight Innings)
CU rallied twice in the game, but came up short as Lander walked off in the eighth inning on a hit by pitch.

Down 2-0 through two innings, junior pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick and junior utilities Amber Stokes and Jenna Witt came through with three consecutive run-scoring hits as Concord took a 3-2 edge.

However, the Bearcats scored four runs over their next two at bats to grab a 6-3 edge. Each team would score a run in the sixth with Concord's coming on a single from senior outfielder Abby Beatty.

Down 7-4 in the top of the seventh, sophomore catcher/third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart had a bases-loaded sacrifice that moved each runner up. With two outs, the next batter, senior utility Kylie Kent came through with a two-run single to tie the game at 7-7.

After the Mountain Lions were unable to score in the top of the eighth, Lander loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame before the walk-off win.

Concord outhit LU 12-10 as Stokes had a team-best three hits. Fitzpatrick, Kent, freshman utility Sarah Thompson and Witt all had two hits with Kent adding two RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Williams (0-1) was charged with the loss as she gave up two runs in 2.2 innings of relief.

Game 2: Erskine 10 – Concord 2
The Flying Fleet scored the first four runs of the game on their way to the win.

Erskins scored a pair of runs in the top of the second before adding a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Fitzpatrick sliced Concord's deficit in half as she clubbed her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the fifth, a two-run homer, that also scored sophomore outfielder Dani Bloomingdale.

But in the top of the sixth, Erskine added six runs.

At the top of CU's order, Fitzpatrick collected two hits and went 7-for-16 on the weekend with three extra-base hits and six RBI.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft tossed five innings in the circle as she allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four batters.

The Mountain Lions are scheduled to face Salem at home February 27 with the first game starting at 2:00 p.m.
