ATHENS, W.Va.- The Concord University softball team started its home slate with a doubleheader sweep of Salem by scores of 9-0 and 12-0 Thursday afternoon at the CU Softball Field.
CU improves to 3-4 this season while Salem drops to 0-4.
Game 1: Concord 9 – Salem 0 (Five Innings)
CU scored eight runs over its final two at-bats to get the twinbill started on a high note.
Up 1-0 going to the fourth inning, the Mountain Lions scored four runs in the frame as sophomore catcher/third baseman
Kaitlyn Stewart and junior utility
Jenna Witt each had extra-base, run-producing hits in the frame.
In the fifth, Witt provided an RBI groundout while junior utility
Amber Stokes bounced a run-scoring single up the middle to push Concord in front 7-0. Later in the frame, senior catcher/first baseman
Lauren Blunt produced a two-run single to end the game.
In the circle, freshman pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson (1-1) allowed just one hit while striking out seven in her five innings of work.
Blunt and Stokes each had two RBI. The Mountain Lions pounded out 11 hits in the game as Blunt, freshman utility
Sarah Thompson and Witt all had two.
Game 2: Concord 12 – Salem 0 (Five Innings)
The Mountain Lions did their damage in the first two innings as they scored 11 of 12 runs in their first two turns to the plate.
In the six-run first inning, senior outfielder
Abby Beatty had a two-RBI single while S. Thompson got the scoring started with a run-scoring double two batters into the inning after L. Thompson drew a walk to start the bottom of the first.
During the five-run second frame, sophomore catcher/third baseman
Lauren Richardson sprayed a two-run base hit.
Overall, the CU offense added 11 more hits in the nightcap as S. Thompson recorded a three-hit contest.
In the circle, sophomore pitchers
Cartney Schoolcraft (1-1) and
Tara Williams combine to limit the Tigers to three hits. Schoolcraft struck out five batters in her three innings of work.
In the two games, S. Thompson was 5-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Stokes added four runs scored and three more RBI.
Concord hosts Saginaw Valley State 12:00 p.m. Friday at the CU Softball Field.
