Concord Goes to 3-0 in MEC Play with 78-66 Win at Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – The Concord University women's basketball team pulled away from Urbana for a 78-66 win Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Grimes Center.

Holding a 60-58 lead after three quarters, the Mountain Lions (5-2, 3-0 MEC) clamped down on Urbana (5-3, 2-1 MEC) in the final period of play.

After each team traded baskets in the first two minutes of the fourth, sophomore guard Maggie Guynn hit a layup, and junior guard Keely Lundy added a three-pointer on the next CU possession as Concord opened up a 67-60 lead with 6:33 remaining in the fourth. The Blue Knights scored on their following possession to get within five points, but the Mountain Lions scored the next five points to open up a 10-point advantage on their way to the 12-point victory.

Concord kept UU scoreless for over three minutes in the fourth quarter as it thwarted any Urbana comeback attempt. And in the fourth, CU held the Blue Knights to 25 percent shooting (4-for-16).

The Mountain Lions led 25-16 after one quarter as Lundy and senior forward Madison May combined for 11 points in the opening period. Urbana closed to within 41-40 at halftime. And the biggest lead either team was able to build in the third quarter was a 49-42 edge for Concord before UU ended the third quarter strong.

May finished the contest with a game-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Riley Fitzwater scored nine of her 21 points in the fourth quarter as she added 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Lundy notched 10 points while sophomore guard Gracie Robinson recorded four points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Mountain Lions shot 49.2 percent (31-for-63) while holding Urbana to 37.9 percent (25-for-66).

CU hosts Notre Dame 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Carter Center.
