Concord Edged by Notre Dame

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to hang onto a late fourth-quarter lead as Notre Dame won, 85-82, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

Up 74-71 after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Maggie Guynn at the 5:45 mark of the fourth quarter, NDC (7-1, 3-1 MEC) went on a 10-2 run over the next 3:18 of the game to take an 81-76 advantage. From there, both teams went cold from the floor until junior forward Riley Fitzwater made a layup with 36 seconds remaining to trim the advantage to three points. However, Concord (5-3, 3-1 MEC) traded layups with Notre Dame's four free throws in the closing moments.

The contest was tight throughout as neither team led by more than two possessions, and featured 14 ties and 14 lead changes.
Concord carried a 37-35 advantage into halftime, but Notre Dame outscored the Mountain Lions 9-4 in the first two minutes of the third quarter to go up 44-41. However, CU punched back as it outscored the Falcons 23-17 over the remainder of the third quarter to lead 64-61 after 30 minutes.

The Maroon and Gray was able to expand its lead to 69-63 after senior forward Madison May completed an old-school, three-point play with 8:36 remaining. But, NDC pulled even with Concord before Guynn's three-pointer three minutes later.

May posted 23 points to go with seven assists. Fitzwater and Guynn each had 22 points while Fitzwater added 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Guynn finished 6-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line.

CU shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the floor while limiting NDC to 44.8 percent (30-for-67). The Falcons knocked down nine three-pointers in the game.

Concord continues its home stand as it plays Fairmont State 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
