URBANA, Ohio – The Concord University men's basketball team was clipped, 61-58, at Urbana Wednesday night inside the Grimes Center in Mountain East Conference play.
Down a point, 18-17, after a layup from junior forward
Liam Evans at the 8:07 mark of the first half, Concord (3-5, 1-2 MEC) watched UU (2-5, 1-2 MEC) go on a 13-1 run to open up its largest lead of the game. However, the Mountain closed the first half on a 9-0 run to get within 31-27 at the intermission.
Freshman guard
Ethan Heller and junior forward
David Bea Mulumba each hit a three to jumpstart the run while Heller hit a free throw and senior guard
Martin Kelly Jr. got a layup to go down over the final three minutes of the first half.
CU trailed throughout the duration of the second half, and found itself down 52-43 with 9:43 remaining. But, Kelly Jr. scored seven straight points to get the Mountain Lions within two points. Junior guard/forward
Malik Johnson scored the next four Concord points as the Maroon and Gray was still down 56-54.
Senior guard
Trey Brisco got Concord within 57-56, and two Johnson foul shots with 1:43 left gave CU its first lead since 2-0. However, Urbana scored on its next possession to go back up, 59-58.
Concord came up empty on its next trip up the floor, and stopped the Blue Knights on its next possession. But, a turnover in the backcourt gave Urbana a steal and an easy basket with 18 seconds remaining to go up three as UU hung on for the win.
Johnson finished with a game-best 21 points on 5-for-9 shooting including a 4-of-7 showing from three-point range. Kelly Jr. added 16 points. Brisco tallied seven points and five assists.
The Mountain Lions welcome Notre Dame to the Carter Center 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
