SALEM, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team swept Salem in non-conference action 25-13, 25-20, 25-16 at Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night.
The Mountain Lions (10-17) hit a season-best .314 including .382 in the opening set as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set. After Salem (1-30) got within 7-4, CU ran off another 6-1 spurt that included three kills from freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall. Three more kills from junior outside hitter Kiristi Pouncy in a four-point span put Concord up 17-6 as it rolled to a 12-point win in the opening set.
The pesky Tigers did not go quietly in the second game as the biggest lead Concord owned was six points, twice. At 18-15, sophomore outside hitter
Jessica King came up with a kill while a Salem attack error gave the Mountain Lions the edge it needed to go up 2-0 in the match.
Much like the first game, CU ran out to a 9-2 advantage on the strength of three kills from freshman outside hitter
Hailey Buchanan and two more kills from senior right side
Lauren Bethel. SU came racing back to close within 15-12, but four straight points from Concord including a kill each from Bethel and Buchanan clinched the win for the Mountain Lions.
Sophomore setter
Imani Rodgers notched 37 assists, three shy of her single-match career high, to go with eight digs in the contest.
Sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron notched eight kills. Hall and Pouncy each finished with seven kills as all of Pouncy's came in the opening set. Pouncy also added all three of her service aces in the first game.
Sophomore defensive specialist
Kelli Ellison recorded 14 digs.
The Mountain Lions return home and to Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Friday against Charleston.
