ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell in three sets to West Virginia State Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.
WVSU improves to 17-12 overall and 9-3 in the MEC with the 25-16, 25-16, 25-12 win. Meanwhile, Concord drops to 9-17 and 4-8 against league foes.
The Mountain Lions hit .154 in the first set which is 18 points higher than their season average, but West Virginia State opened up the game on a 10-2 run. CU responded to get within 12-9 after a kill from freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall and an attack error by the Yellow Jackets. However, West Virginia State got its lead to a set-high nine points to win the opening set.
CU scored the first three points of the second set behind a block assist from freshman outside hitter
Hailey Buchanan and sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron. But, WVSU answered by scoring nine of the next 12 points to go up 9-6. Concord was able to get the set tied at 13-13 after a kill by Herron, but once against the Yellow Jackets scored three straight points, using the momentum to win the set.
West Virginia State started the final set just like the first set—on a 10-2 spurt—and the Mountain Lions were unable to play catch up.
Sophomore outside hitter Camyrn Huber tallied 11 kills while hitting .250. Herron chipped in six kills.

Lindsay Maddox recorded 10 digs.
The Mountain Lions step out of MEC play for the final time this season when they travel to Salem 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
