Concord Drops Five-Set Match to Glenville State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost a five-set match (25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-13) to Glenville State Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Carter Center.

The Mountain Lions (10-19, 4-10 MEC) pulled away from GSC (5-22, 2-12) in the middle stages of the first game as they held a 13-9 lead. Concord scored the next five points that included two service aces from freshman outside hitter Hailey Buchanan and a kill from sophomore middle hitter Sheridan Herron. In a comeback effort, Glenville State got as close as 20-18, but CU scored five straight points including junior right side Kenzie Coulter coming up with one of her four first set kills.

The Pioneers rebounded and took a 2-1 lead on Concord including surviving 10 ties and six lead changes in the third set. The middle game featured the score being tied for the first 22 points with the exception of being knotted 7-7. CU also held a 14-11 lead in the third game after two aces from junior outside hitter Kirsti Pouncy, but Glenville State rattled off six straight points to take control of the set.

CU answered the fourth set by winning convincingly. Up four, 16-12, the Mountain Lions scored seven straight to force a decisive fifth game. In the run, Coulter added four more kills.

Holding a 7-4 edged in the fifth set on the strength of two kills each from freshman middle hitter Amber Hall and Pouncy, Concord saw GSC go on a 4-0 run to take the lead. CU went back up 9-8, but Glenville State scored four straight point on its way to the set and match win.

Coulter, Hall and Herron all finished with 12 kills as Herron hit .435 in the match. Sophomore setter Imani Rodgers tallied 31 assists. Senior setter Jenna Mounts added 28 assists.

Senior defensive specialist Erin Shannon totaled 16 digs.

The Mountain Lions will hold Senior Night prior to Friday's 5:00 p.m. match with Wheeling.
