GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team swept Glenville State 25-23, 25-18, 26-24, Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Waco Center.
The Mountain Lions (5-10, 2-1 MEC) had to overcome a 9-4 deficit in the first set, but rattled off a 6-1 run to tie the score at 10-10. Junior outside hitter Kirsit Pouncy had three of her five kills for the match during the run. The hot streak continued for CU as it opened up a 16-11 lead. However, Glenville State (2-13, 0-3 MEC) battled back to tie the set at 22-22. A kill by sophomore setter
Imani Rodgers stopped the GSC run, and consecutive kills by Pouncy and junior right side
Kenzie Coulter gave Concord a 1-0 lead.
Momentum from the first game carried over to the second set as the Mountain Lions opened up a 13-6 lead—after a quick 4-0 run—to create some separation. A kill from sophomore outside hitter
Peyton Wiseman and a consecutive service aces from freshman outside hitter
Hailey Buchanan aided the run. Up seven, CU never let the advantage slip below five points as three straight kills by freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall closed the game out.
Despite being down 2-0 in the match, the Pioneers did not go away quietly. With Concord four points away from a sweep after a kill by sophomore right side
Camryn Huber made the score 21-17, Glenville State took the next four points to tie the score. Tied at 22-22, CU scored back-to-back points. But, it was answered by Glenville State. A kill by Huber put CU up 25-24, and an attack error by the Pioneers gave CU a sweep.
The offense for the Mountain Lions was spread out as five different Concord players had at least five kills led by Hall's nine. Huber tallied eight including five in the third set. Wiseman added six kills and a team-best four blocks.
Senior setter
Jenna Mounts and Rodgers each handed out 20 assists.
Junior defensive specialist
Lindsay Maddox had 25 digs including 13 in the first set that put her over 1,000 for her career.
