INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to West Virginia State Friday night in Mountain East Conference play at the Walker Convocation Center.
After battling West Virginia State (10-9, 4-0 MEC) to 25-23 in the first set, the Mountain Lions (5-11, 2-2 MEC) lost the next two sets, 25-18, 25-15.
WVSU jumped out to a 7-4 edge early in the first set as it forced Concord to chase the lead. Still down 21-16 in the game, CU went on a 6-1 run to tie the score at 22-22. The run was paced by sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron who had a kill and three total blocks to help knot the score. A West Virginia State ball handling gave Concord a 23-22 lead, but the Yellow Jackets scored the final three points in the set to win.
In the second game, the Mountain Lions tied the score at 6-6 on a WVSU attack error. However, West Virginia State went on a 6-0 run to take control of the set. The Mountain Lions got the deficit to three points two different times, but was unable to close the gap any further.
After some back-and-forth to begin the third set, Concord tied the score 11-11 after another West Virginia State attack error. But, WVSU opened up a 15-11 lead and never trailed again.
Freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall had a team-best eight kills while hitting .438 in the match. Senior setter
Jenna Mounts tallied 15 assists.
Junior defensive specialist
Lindsay Maddox and senior defensive specialist
Erin Shannon each had 11 digs.
The Mountain Lions play at Charleston 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
