Concord Comes Up Short at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost a four-set match to Charleston Saturday afternoon at the Wehrle Center in Mountain East Conference action. 
 
The Mountain Lions (5-12, 2-3 MEC) were unable to hang on to leads of 8-2 and 18-14 in the opening set as Charleston (7-14, 2-3 MEC)  rallied to win the first set, 26-24. 
 
Tied at 14-14 in the second set, Concord ripped off four straight points to take an 18-14 edge. Sophomore middle hitter Sheridan Herron and sophomore right side Camryn Huber each had a kill to spur the run. Charleston was able to close the lead to three points twice, but two kills from freshman middle hitter Amber Hall gave Concord the set win by four points, 25-21. 
 
CU opened the third game by scoring the first two points, but the Golden Eagles scored four of the next five points as they forced Concord to chase the lead for the remainder of the set. The Maroon and Gray got the deficit to two points several time, but at 15-13 Charleston went on a 4-0 run to create separation. UC won the set 25-20. 
 
Down 4-1 early in the fourth set, Huber had three straight kills to tie the score, but Charleston opened a 10-7 edge. Once again, Concord was forced to rally throughout the set. Facing a 16-12 deficit, Hall and Huber each had a kill while junior defensive specialist Lindsay Maddox had a service ace to get CU back to within 16-15. The Golden Eagles, however, held off Concord's comeback to win the set, 25-18. 
 
Huber finished with 13 kills. Hall added eight kills. 
 
Maddox went for a season-best 33 digs. Senior setter Jenna Mounts had 23 assists in the setback. 
 
Concord plays a doubleheader Thursday first against Notre Dame at 3:00 p.m. then faces Salem at 5:00 p.m. inside the Carter Center.
