ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets to Davis & Elkins Friday night inside the Carter Center in a Mountain East Conference match.
All three sets were the same score, 25-20, as the Mountain Lions fall to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in conference play. D&E goes to 8-5 this season and 2-1 in the MEC.
CU took control of the first set as it went on a 4-0 run with the scored tied at 7-7. Junior outside hitter
Kirsti Pouncy had two kills in the mini run. After a 6-0 run in the first game gave Davis & Elkins a 14-12 lead, the Mountain Lions clawed back to tie the game at 18-18 on a Senators' attack error. But D&E had rolled off six straight points to take the first game, 25-20.
Two consecutive kills from sophomore middle hitter
Camryn Huber gave Concord an 11-9 lead in the second set. However, D&E made another mid set run to take a 12-11 lead. From there, the lead changed hands three more times as the Mountain Lions were able to get within 20-19 after a kill from sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron. However, Davis & Elkins scored five of the final six points of the second set.
CU climbed out of a 9-1 and 21-12 hole in the third set, trailing 22-17 after three D&E attack errors and a service error. But five points was as close as Concord would get in its comeback attempt as it fell by five points.
Huber had nine kills to pace the Mountain Lions. Freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall added seven kills.
Senior defensive specialist
Erin Shannon tallied 22 digs in the match. Sophomore setter
Imani Rodgers went for 15 assists while senior setter
Jenna Mounts added 14 assists.
Concord hosts West Virginia Wesleyan 12:00 p.m. Sunday in a MEC match.
