Concord Rallies Past Wheeling, 2-1

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team scored two second-half goals to get by Wheeling, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Cline Stadium.

Wheeling (2-12, 1-11 MEC) scored in the 17th minute of the game to go up 1-0 on CU (3-9-2, 2-9-2 MEC). Although shots were even at 7-7 in the first half, the Cardinals maintained the one-goal advantage at the intermission.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Mountain Lions were able to gain possession from 35 yards away. Freshman midfielder Ben Greear slipped a pass to senior midfielder Courtney Skerritt who got past a Wheeling defender and fired a low line drive into the right corner of the goal from 15 yards away to tie the game.

In the 62nd minute, after a Concord clearance defensive, sophomore forward Daniel Culverwell was able to earn CU a corner kick by deflecting a ball off a WU defender. On the ensuing corner, Skerrit delivered the ball into the penalty area where it found the feet of junior midfielder Samuel Appiah for his first collegiate goal.

Up 2-1, the Mountain Lions fended off the Cardinals late in the game. In the 85th minute, Wheeling's Andres Carceres found himself inside the penalty area without a CU defender around, but freshman goalkeeper Barett Schultz made a diving save to his right to keep Concord ahead.

From there, the Mountain Lions ran out the rest of the clock without a serious Wheeling threat to seal the win.

CU outshot Wheeling, 19-12, and had one more corner kick, 6-5. Culverwell had three shots while Skerritt recorded four. Schultz made five saves in the game.

The Mountain Lions head out on the road to face Urbana 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
