BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost a tough 2-1 decision to West Liberty Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Cline Stadium.
All three goals in the game came in the first half, but the Mountain Lions (2-9-2, 1-9-2 MEC) provided plenty of chances in the second half as they outshot West Liberty (3-11-1, 2-9-1 MEC) 13-4 after halftime and 20-13 for the game.
The 20 shots were a season high.
WLU got on the board first with a penalty kick in the 21
st minute. However, 15 minutes later sophomore forward
Daniel Culverwell tied the game with his second goal of the season on an assist from freshman midfielder
Michael Shelor.
After receiving the pass from Shelor, Culverwell was able beat a West Liberty defender and lofted the shot over Hilltoppers' goalkeeper Noah Underwood on the right edge of the penalty box.
It appeared the game would be tied at halftime, but Timothe TranVan scored for WLU with 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
Of the 13 chances Concord produced in the second half, none were closer to going in the net than a sequence in the 80
th minute.
Freshman midfielder
Ben Greear smashed a shot off the right goalpost from the top of the penalty box with the rebound deflecting out to senior midfielder
Courtney Skerritt who had his attempt from eight yards away saved by Underwood, but not cleanly. With the ball rolling in the penalty box, Shelor's shot went high of the goal. All three shots came within 17 seconds of each other.
The Mountain Lions had two more chances in the 86
th minute, but was unable to send the game to overtime.
Culverwell and sophomore midfielder
Barom Balliu each had three shots. Junior goalkeeper
Kyle Brown made two saves.
