Concord Pushes Win Streak to Six with 2-0 Win over Wesleyan

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to down West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Cline Stadium.

After a first half that saw just five combined shots, action picked up in the second half.

A foul on the Bobcats (6-5, 5-3 MEC) set up the first Concord (11-1, 7-1 MEC) goal of the day in the 51st minute. Junior defender Alyssa Mahar sent a free kick towards the penalty box where sophomore forward Leah Foster headed the ball inside the penalty area. On Foster's flick, junior midfielder Mira Kontio controlled the ball and fired a shot into the net for her fifth goal of the season.

Kontio nearly put Concord up 2-0 in the 63rd minute after Wesleyan goalkeeper Chelsea Hubner mishandled the ball along the edge of the penalty area, but her shot went over the crossbar.

However, Concord was able to capitalize on a second Hubner misplay in the 70th minute. After Hubner let the ball get away, junior midfielder Yasmin Mosby grabbed possession and dribbled around a WVWC defender and found the open goal for her second score of the season. Before the misplay, Mahar sent a pass over the Wesleyan defense as she tallied her second assist of the game.

Holding a 2-0 lead, the Mountain Lions' defense clamped down and held Wesleyan to three shots over the final 20 minutes with just one coming on goal.

Total shots in the contest were even at 10-10, but Concord had seven shots on goal compare to just one for the Bobcats.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Maher made one save to record CU's eighth shutout of the season.

Concord plays Davis & Elkins at home 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
