Concord Loses on Late Goal by West Virginia Wesleyan

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell late to West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, Sunday in a Mountain East Conference game at Cline Stadium.

The first two goals of the game came five minutes apart. The Bobcats (7-4-1, 6-3 MEC) scored in the 26th minute, but CU (2-7-2, 1-7-1 MEC) answered quickly in the 31st minute. Shortly after a Concord corner kick, sophomore forward Daniel Culverwell sent a pass to sophomore midfielder Diego Marti Perez who quickly found junior defender Bruno Baptista for his second goal of the season.

The game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime after junior goalkeeper Kyle Brown made a sprawling save second before the intermission.

Over the much of the second half, both teams were unable to find scoring chances as both defenses kept the ball away from the penalty area. Wesleyan broke through with a goal in the 86th minute which was just the seventh combined shot in the second half.

WVWC owned a 14-4 advantage in shots while holding a slim 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

Brown made two saves on the contest.

CU travels to Davis & Elkins 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
