WISE, Va. – The Concord University volleyball team outlasted UVa.-Wise in five sets Tuesday night at the Prior Center in a non-conference match.
The Mountain Lions (3-9) opened up a 2-0 lead in the match by winning the first two sets 27-25 and 25-18, but UVa.-Wise (1-10) fought back to force a fifth set by winning the third and fourth games 25-19 and 31-29. CU was the team that had to rally in the fifth set as it got down 5-1, but finished on a 14-6 run to win the fifth game 15-11.
Sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron tallied four kills and a block in the first set as Concord opened up a 19-15 lead after a 4-0 run, then relied on two UVa.-Wise errors at the end of the set to go up 1-0. Similar to the first set, the Mountain Lions pulled away in the middle of the set with a 4-0 run at 14-14 on its way 2-0 match lead. Jessica King fueled the run.
UVa.-Wise controlled the third set, but it appeared CU would halt the Cavaliers' momentum in the fourth game as it stood three points away from a match win with a 22-19 lead. But, UVa.-Wise won three straight points to tie the set. From there, the teams traded points until the Cavaliers won two straight at 29-29 to force a decisive fifth game. The fourth set was the longest game of the season for Concord, eclipsing a 29-27 set against Limestone.
Down 5-1 in that fifth set, the Mountain Lions scored three straight points to get within 5-4. However, Concord did not take a lead until 10-9 after a service ace from sophomore middle hitter
Camryn Huber who also had two prior kills during CU's comeback. The Maroon and Gray was able to get two more kills to open up a 12-9 lead on their way to a four-point game win.
Junior right side
Kenzie Coulter had a career-best 11 kills to with a hitting percentage of .317. Sophomore setter
Imani Rodgers handed a personal single-game best 40 assists as she was the lone setter for CU in the final four games.
Junior defensive specialist
Lindsay Maddox added 29 digs while junior outside hitter
Kirsti Pouncy went for eight kills and 23 digs.
Concord begins Mountain East Conference 5:00 p.m. Friday at home against Davis & Elkins. Â
