ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team shot 57 percent on its way to a 90-73 win over Salem Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (8-3) shot at least 46 percent from the floor in each quarter and assisted on 23 of 36 made field goals as it trailed just once in the game.
CU scored 27 points in the first quarter and led Salem (2-11) by nine after one quarter before expanding the lead to 13 points, 31-18, after four straight points by sophomore forward
Tamra Scott to start the second quarter. Leading by double digits for most of the second period, Concord had its lead trimmed to nine points, 46-37, at halftime.
Concord worked up its advantage back to 14 points, 54-40, after a layup from sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater at the 7:42 mark of the third quarter. However, the Tigers ran off seven straight points to get with seven points. But, it was the closest SU would get for the remainder of the game after senior guard
Emily Boothe and junior forward
Madison May combined for the next seven points.
The Mountain Lions led by as much as 20 points, 83-63, after a free throw from May with three minutes remaining in the contest before settling for the 17-point victory.
May led all scorers with 25 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Fitzwater chipped in 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
Freshman forward
Maggie Guynn came off the bench to net 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Scott rounded out the double-figure scorers for CU with 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 performance from the floor.
Senior guard
Andreanna Pool came close to a double-double with nine points and seven assists.
The 57.1 percent (36-for-63) showing from the field was Concord's best shooting mark of the season, and its 23 assists were the second most in a game in 2018-19.
The Mountain Lions resume Mountain East Conference play next Thursday when it welcomes Shepherd to the Carter Center.
